Big Screen Movies

January 15th, 2012

My son said something interesting the other day. He plans on going to the movie theater to watch a particular movie, because it wants to see it on the big screen.

He usually waits for movies to come out on DVD and then rents them at Redbox. But wanting to see an action movie on the big screen makes sense. The special effects will look much more impressive when they are huge and in your face instead of on a smaller screen in your living room. I had not thought of that before, but he is right.

Chinese Donuts

January 11th, 2012

Last time I ordered Chinese takeout for dinner, the restaurant added an order of Chinese donuts for me. I’ve never had Chinese donuts, so I didn’t know what to expect. They put them in my order for free, saying that I’m a good customer and they wanted to do something nice for me. That was really sweet and I appreciate their effort.

We tasted them and everyone likes them. They are small, round balls of dough that are fried quickly and then rolled in a granulated sugar. I can probably cook these at home but I rarely fry anything.

So next time I order Chinese takeout I will probably order some Chinese donuts. They obviously understand the premise of getting us to try something and if we like it we will come back for more. That’s what I call smart marketing!

Motown for Cleaning

January 5th, 2012

When I know I have to spend a couple of hours doing heavy housework and deep cleaning, I put some Motown CDs in the CD player and that keeps me moving! I am listening to Dionne Warwick, Percy Sledge, the Supremes, the Temptations and a bunch more. I have about a dozen compilation albums with all the great Motown era hits. This day is going to be very productive!

Cooking is Hard Work

December 27th, 2011

A very long time ago I worked as a waitress in a local fine dining restaurant for a few months, which is where I first met my friend, Selena. We were both trying to make money in a short term, part time job so we could survive and then move on to bigger and better things.

It was an eye opening experience. I was blessed to have parents who took the family out to restaurants frequently for our meals. Plus we traveled a lot and ate food from a variety of regions and cultures.

Part of waitressing involved learning your way around the kitchen and appreciating all the work that the cooks and chefs had to do. They are one of the most under-appreciated workers in this country. A good chef plans menus and recipes, orders food, prepares the ingredients, cooks it, plates it and expedites it. That is a lot of responsibility and a lot of work in a busy kitchen.
