Stay Out of the Hospital

There is an article about why people should not go into the hospital in July. That is because it is the start of the new year for the med students – they know nothing and the quality of care is at the lowest. I say, people should not go into the hospital unless it is their last resort. And if it is not truly a life threatening emergency, stay out of the emergency room – see your own doctor instead. Most things can wait a day to be seen, and often things are better in the morning. Not all, mind you, but a lot.

For most people, hospitals are where you go to die. For all the advances we have in medicine, people in hospitals still get staph infections, are given the wrong medications and endure medical procedure mistakes that forever alter their lives. If there is any way to avoid going to the hospital, try those avenues first and make the hospital your very last resort.

Summer Supper

Back in the 1960′s, our family had a cabin on the River and we spent our summers there. We used to boil a bushel of Chesapeake Blue Crabs on the outdoor fireplace, in a big tin trash can with chickenwire in the bottom. Dad splashed his secret recipe of crab seasonings on them and lit a wood fire to cook them up.

Mom cooked sweet corn on the back burner, alongside the pot of crabs, chopped up fresh veggies for a big bowl of potato salad, and made a big pot of baked beans. If she made enough the first time, we could eat from those for 3 days and she wouldn’t have to cook but once.

Playing Cards

We played cards last night. What fun! It’s been a long time since I held a deck of cards in my hands and shuffled them up. Nowadays we use the computer to do that for us. But it’s not the same.

Do you know how hard it can be to find four people available to come over and sit with you for a couple hours? Do you know how hard it is to find four people who all know the rules for the same card game? We bickered and bargained and ended up playing Hearts – it was the only one we could all agree on. That was great fun for me – and I won 3 of the 5 games!
